Lake Ridge Elementary School Family Newsletter

January 21, 2024

Dear LRES Families,

We hope you have enjoyed the snow days! Thank you to our fabulous PTO for stocking our fridge! Our staff really appreciate that. We want to remind you that January 26th is a half day of school with dismissal at 12:40 and parent-teacher conferences in the afternoon. January 26th is also the last day of the 2nd quarter. If you haven’t met with your child’s teacher yet this year, please make sure you schedule a conference that afternoon.  Our teachers have met with 83% of their students’ parents. We want to get that to 100% because we know an authentic partnership with good communication is impactful to student learning. The School Board recently approved a modification of the 2023-24 school calendar to designate March 5, 2024, as a student holiday and staff workday due to the presidential primary.

VIRGINIA GROWTH ASSESSMENTS (VGA)

We have started Virginia Growth Assessments for 3rd-5th grade students and have already had to change the schedule due to the snow days! Teachers will share the parent reports with you once testing is complete. For more information from VDOE about these tests, see the updated VDOE parent webpage at VGA Info for Parents

Here is the updated schedule:

3rd Grade Reading: 1/22

3rd Grade Math: 2/1

4th Grade Reading: 1/18

4th Grade Math: 1/25

5th Grade Reading: 1/24

5th Grade Math: 2/1

TESTING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS

The PWCS English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment window opens on January 22, 2024, and continues until March 15, 2024. All of our students identified as English Learners will participate in this assessment. We don’t get the results until the end of the school year.

PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND LITERACY SCREENING (PALS)

We are in the middle of our PALS testing now for kindergarten-2nd grade and some 3rd-grade students. Teachers will share results with you when they are finished.

ATTENDANCE

Student attendance directly impacts learning. Right now, it is a real concern for us. Currently, 17% of our students have been chronically absent from school this year. VDOE's definition of chronically absent is: “A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10 percent.” What can you do to help? Please plan family trips during school holidays. If your child has an appointment, have them attend school for at least part of the day if possible.

FEEDBACK ON COMMUNICATION

Thank you for your feedback. We learned that some of you aren’t receiving our messages. We will start sending all of our messages via text and email just to make sure everyone gets them. If you know of someone who still isn’t getting messages, please have them reach out to our Parent Liaison, Ms. Batres at 703-494-9153 or [email protected]

LRES FACEBOOK PAGE

We listened to your feedback and are including more pictures on our Facebook page of school events and students. We recently posted a lot of pictures of the collaboration between our music teacher, Mr. Milner, and our PE teachers, Mr. Kern and Mr. Rohrback in PE class and the fun events Madame Rigot planned in French week with the King Cakes “Galette des Rois.” Check it out here: LRES Facebook
